About Urbane Republic

Welcome to the Urbane Republic, a space that covers Australian and international politics, the media, design and being a dad to a daughter, written by a fairly stereotypical Gen X male. I’m a journalist by trade, although it’s been a fair while since I last bothered a newsroom. I’ve also spent time as an analyst for the Australian Treasury, and worked in government relations. The most common theme across all those jobs has been words, and people have generally been happy to pay me to write them or edit them. That’s helped me see more of the world than any single person probably deserves.

Urbane Republic is a space to write the things I want to write without having to convince an editor or please a client. If you enjoy what’s on offer here, then welcome! If not, then there’s no hard feelings and I urge you to keep exploring the big wide internet until you find something more to your liking.

The name is a play on Marx’s reference to the concept of an “urban republic” and its ideals of self-governance, intellectual community, and shared progress.
